  • Tips to help teachers use technology effectively
In this blog post, educators in the United Kingdom offer advice for using digital devices, such as laptops, smartphones and tablet computers, in the classroom. Educators suggest that teachers be willing to admit they do not know it all when it comes to technology, choose the right technology to meet classroom goals and work with the available technology. One educator also suggests focusing on the social aspects of technology use. The Guardian (London)/Teacher Network Blog (9/16) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story

  • Flipped instruction takes off in Fla. classrooms
A growing number of teachers in Florida are adopting the flipped instructional method, in which their students watch instructional videos at home and spend class time putting what they have learned into practice. "It takes me out of being the center of the classroom and starts centering the classroom around them, so that they can grasp more than just being robots and taking in the information and regurgitating it," said high-school algebra teacher Sarah Devereaux. • More Va. schools could provide students' grades online
Richmond, Va., officials say they have the necessary technology in place -- including fiber-optic-based Internet access -- to be able to track students' academic progress online. Similar systems already are being used in neighboring districts, including in Henrico County, where the HCPSlink system gives middle- and high-school students and their parents access to grades, homework assignments, attendance and other information. Schools and Social Media

  • How students can use social media to build virtual networks
In this blog post, Google-certified teacher Kristen Swanson writes about how she will leverage her digital network as she relocates for 10 months to Ohio. That has led Swanson to recognize the importance, she writes, of teaching students to make similar connections and develop a network via social media. Students should be able to find learning communities that are aligned with their interests, balance their personal and professional use and be comfortable connecting digitally regardless of their physical location, she writes.
