DSCR1 interacts with FMRP and is required for spine morphogenesis and local protein synthesis

Kyung-Tai Min and colleagues report the first molecular link between Down syndrome and Fragile X syndrome. DSCR1 (implicated in Down syndrome) interacts with FMRP (Fragile X syndrome protein) to regulate spine morphogenesis and local protein synthesis in dendrites. Both processes are implicated in synaptic activity and intellectual disabilities.

Binding of the Atg1/ULK1 kinase to the ubiquitin-like protein Atg8 regulates autophagy

The Atg1/ULK1 kinase is an essential component of the core autophagy machinery and needs to be regulated in response to nutrient availability. A novel conserved mechanism to balance autophagic flux during nutrient depletion involves Atg8-dependent targeting of the Atg1–Atg13 complex to autophagy-mediated degradation.
