  • New SARS-related virus investigated by health officials
A person in Saudi Arabia has died and a man from Qatar who recently visited Saudi Arabia has been hospitalized with a new coronavirus, a virus in the same family as severe acute respiratory syndrome, which killed some 800 people worldwide in 2002. Officials say they are investigating other possible cases but can't yet say whether there is a public health threat. • Illegal feeding may have contributed to famous dolphin's death
Despite the fact that the Marine Mammal Protection Act prohibits feeding or petting wild dolphins, many people in Sarasota, Fla., did just that for years to one dolphin in particular, possibly contributing to his recent death, officials say. The body of the dolphin, named Beggar, was recently found in the waters where he was known to be fed by boaters, and a necropsy revealed fishing line and hooks, fish bait and ulcers in his stomach as well as external injuries from boats. "All of our findings indicate that he was in poor health for a long time and that his interactions with humans played a role," said Gretchen Lovewell of Mote Marine Laboratory. • Va. state veterinarian stresses importance of rabies barrier
According to Virginia state public health veterinarian Julia Murphy, the state typically has 500-600 annual cases of rabies in wildlife, mostly raccoons, skunks and foxes, and there have been no human cases in the country this year. Dr. Murphy says vaccinating pets for rabies creates a barrier between wildlife, the main rabies reservoir, and humans. The Examiner (Washington, D.C.) (9/24) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Negotiating a truce in litter box wars
When two cats are in the house, owners need at least three litter boxes to keep the peace between pets, writes veterinarian Marty Becker. Boxes should be in locations that offer easy access yet privacy, adds Dr. Becker. Although most cats prefer soft, unscented, clumping litter, preferences may differ, so Dr. Becker recommends trying several types to find the best fit. The Sacramento Bee (Calif.) • How to save money on pet care costs
Americans will spend a total of $52.87 billion on their pets this year, according to projections by the American Pet Products Association. However, pets don't have to break the bank. AVMA President Dr. Douglas Aspros recommends several ways to ensure pet health while keeping costs down, including researching the health problems common in a given breed before obtaining a pet, using a good-quality pet food while ensuring pets aren't overfed, considering pet insurance and getting regular veterinary exams with vaccinations and other preventative care to help stave off potentially expensive medical problems. • Veterinarians: More than just "animal doctors"
It's easy to get bogged down into thinking that physicians only take care of people and veterinarians only take care of animals, but that's far from the truth. Veterinarians play critical roles in animal and human health, but these roles are often overlooked or unrecognized. To learn more about the role veterinary medicine plays in "One Health" — not just animal health but its impact on human and environmental health — visit AVMA's Aardvarks to Zebras Web site.
