War caused a substantial migration from Northern France to the areas of Flanders in the 16th century. Although this happened more than 400 years ago, it influenced the genetic variation within Flanders. M H D Larmuseau and Colleagues' research strongly suggests for the first time that the analysis of the surname origin can be used as an important feature to select DNA donors for population genetic studies.
