  • District reveals its secrets to a successful BYOD program
A new bring-your-own-device program will be successful only if classroom instruction changes to integrate the new technology, according to officials in a district that launched their own successful program. The district rolled out its program slowly -- initially providing 130 devices to fifth-graders -- and created a package of mobile-learning tools for teachers, which included Edmodo. As the program was expanded, officials say teachers were advised to have students work in teams if not all students had access to their own devices. • Middle school uses iPads to offer differentiated instruction
Sixth-graders at Hazelbrook Middle School in Tualatin, Ore., this year will be using iPads in language arts lessons as part of an effort to close the racial achievement gap, while also tailoring lessons to student needs. Teachers say they plan to use the iBooks Author application to have students create stories. The iPads will be synced together and linked with sixth-grade learning specialist Rory Moore's laptop, so he can offer immediate and custom feedback to each child. • Social studies teacher shifts to online instruction
Ann Coates, a high-school social studies teacher in Hanover, Mass., this year will teach psychology and Advanced Placement psychology classes online as part of the Virtual High School network. The program enables students from all over the world and from different grade levels to take the same courses. Coates said the program is unlikely to replace face-to-face teaching but offers online experience besides classroom time. Wicked Local (9/5) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story

  • Va. students appreciate relaxed rules on technology use
In some Virginia schools, where officials have relaxed policies on students' use of technology while in school, students say they appreciate the ability to use their phones and other devices. "I thought it was cool, and I feel a lot of people won't be on their phone as much during class because they can check their phones in between classes," high-school junior Tara Thomas said. • Should schools sell online advertising?
A Michigan-based company is working to help school districts secure additional revenue by selling ads on their websites to local and national businesses. So far, 53 districts in Michigan are working with the company, with an additional 47 expected to by the fall. Critics, however, say the potential downside of the online ads is not worth the revenue -- which is relatively small. One complaint is that the ads tend to market unhealthy foods.
