Head of the Class

  • W.Va. social studies teachers to use downloadable textbooks
In West Virginia, schools will adopt electronic textbooks for social studies classes beginning in the 2013-14 academic year. While many educators say this is a step forward for education -- and technology integration -- others say they are concerned that not all students have equal access to technology at home. Joey Wiseman, social studies coordinator for the West Virginia Department of Education, said that many teachers already are incorporating digital resources in class. • Technology is used by students to cheat, teachers to catch them
Teachers and students say that students increasingly are using technology to cheat. That includes lifting entire papers from the Internet, photographing exams and getting quiz answers from their cellphones. However, teachers also are using technology to catch cheaters by scouring the Internet for signs of plagiarism and using high-tech systems to observe students. Teachers also are asking students to use examples from their own lives in essays to make plagiarism more difficult and confiscating students' phones before tests. Yollis also uses the class blog as part of lessons, including one in which students studied famous people and posted blog comments as the people they studied. • Moving education into the 21st century on a budget
The type of classroom needed to a deliver a 21st-century education will not come cheap.
