Tumour-secreted miR-9 promotes endothelial cell migration and angiogenesis by activating the JAK-STAT pathway

Secreted miRNAs are increasingly recognized in multiple biological processes. Here, miR-9 is shown to be secreted from cancer cells to enhance endothelial recruitment. This contribution to tumour angiogenesis could be amenable for therapeutic intervention.

Generation of DNA single-strand displacement by compromised nucleotide excision repair

Strong tumorigenic effects of a particular mutation in the key nucleotide excision repair factor XPD may not be due to DNA break generation, but caused by inefficient excision steps resulting in long single-strand gaps and genomic instability.

Multivalent di-nucleosome recognition enables the Rpd3S histone deacetylase complex to tolerate decreased H3K36 methylation levels

The RNA-binding E3 ubiquitin ligase MEX-3C links ubiquitination with MHC-I mRNA degradation

The novel RNA-binding E3 ubiquitin ligase MEX-3C targets the mRNA of MHC-I gene HLA-A2 for degradation in a RING-dependent manner. Depletion of MEX-3C in NK cells leads to reduced killing of target cells.

Staphylococcus aureus Staphopain A inhibits CXCR2-dependent neutrophil activation and chemotaxis

Neutrophil activation and recruitment to the site of infection are critical for host immunity. In humans, the cysteine protease Staphopain A of the pathogen S. aureus blocks this process by cleaving the chemokine receptor CXCR2.

A stomatin dimer modulates the activity of acid-sensing ion channels

Stomatins govern membrane trafficking and ion channel activity. The banana-shaped stomatin-domain dimmers oligomerize into a cylindrical structure. A dynamic hydrophobic pocket at the concave side of the dimer mediates repression of acid-sensing ion channel 3 (ASIC3) activity.
