  • H3N2 developed from 2009 pandemic strain
A study of pigs at state fairs in Minnesota and South Dakota in 2009 found that up to 20% of the Minnesota animals and one pig from South Dakota were carrying influenza, and that strain has mixed with others to create the H3N2 variant currently infecting pigs and people. "Pandemic influenza is a good example of how certain strains of influenza can spread in both human and pig populations at the same time — this is obviously of serious concern," said veterinarian Juergen A. Richt of Kansas State University. PorkNetwork.com (8/20) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • N.C. State veterinary school announces exotic animal service
The College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University has announced its new Exotic Animal Medicine Service, which will treat exotic pets including turtles, toads, nonvenomous snakes, chickens and other animals without a referral. "It's a specialized area and a lot of veterinary schools don't have the resources or expertise to train students in exotic animal medicine," said veterinarian Laurie Degernes, an associate professor at the veterinary school. • National Zoo officials watch and wait for panda pregnancy
National Zoo officials are hoping for a baby panda in the next two months as they closely watch their female panda, Mei Xiang, who they artificially inseminated in April. She has had five false pregnancies in a row. Mei Xiang, along with all zoo giant pandas in the U.S., is on loan from China and may be returned and replaced with another panda if she doesn't produce an offspring this time. • Tail-chasing dogs may shed light on human psychological disorders
A recent study from Finland found that dogs with obsessive-compulsive behaviors may serve as a good model for researching the causes of human psychological disorders. Some 400 dogs were included in the study, and the findings suggest dogs that obsessively chased their tails were more prone to other nervous behaviors. Because dogs live in close proximity with humans and share some physiological similarities, they make a good model for studying human disorders, according to the researchers.
