  • A guide to a successful one-to-one iPad rollout
What does it take to ensure the successful rollout of a one-to-one iPad program? In this blog post, Jac de Haan, technology integration specialist, outlines step-by-step what a successful two-month rollout should look like. In the first week, students establish solid academic habits without the iPads, before students and parents learn about the devices. By week four, students are given the iPads at the beginning of class and asked to return them at the end, building up to week nine when students are trusted to use the devices as they see fit. • What online students should know before the school year begins
As students prepare for the school year to begin, online-learning veterans offer four tips to help students who learn in a virtual environment make the adjustment. Among the suggestions are to begin planning immediately after receiving the course schedule, make sure to have the appropriate software and hardware, take the opportunity to meet in-person with online instructors and become familiar with available resources. • New site, app provide videos for K-12 students, teachers
A new online tutoring site for K-12 students includes an iPad application that might provide competition for the Khan Academy, Mike Bock writes in this blog post. The Knowmia site searches online videos and finds the best lessons to meet each individual's needs, he notes. The Knowmia Teach iPad app, which developer Ariel Braunstein calls "iMovie for teachers," includes a repository of more than 7,000 videos teachers can use to demonstrate educational concepts, Bock adds. • N.C. district expects iPads to cut textbook expenses
Officials in a North Carolina school district have announced plans to purchase 137 iPads, and say that eventually the $60,000 investment will help the district cut costs. The iPads will be distributed to students who are taking college-level classes. Officials say the cost-savings will be realized because students will use e-books, rather than expensive college textbooks, which can cost as much as $230 each. WWAY-TV (Wilmington, N.C.) • School coaches tell players to keep it clean online
With social media websites becoming increasingly popular among students, concern over the content of students' posts has spilled out of the classroom and onto the playing field. Some coaches now say student-athletes are using sites, such as Twitter and Facebook, to hold inappropriate conversations once reserved for the locker room. To stop the behavior, some coaches use diminished playing time as a punishment for inappropriate posts, and recruiters now say they check potential players' posts before they arrive on campus. • Why Dante would have loved Pinterest
Before the invention of the Internet, many creative types kept "commonplace books" that served essentially the same function as a Pinterest account, historians say. Dante, John Milton, Mark Twain and Lewis Carroll all kept the books, which served as scrapbooks containing quotes, sketches, recipes and other written or doodled content. "Today, commonplacing continues in ways that reflect available technology," Kelsey McKinney writes. The Daily Beast (8/16) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story
