The tremendous advances made in isolating, manipulating and detecting single quantum systems mean that experimental implementations of ‘quantum simulators’ - for the simulation of one quantum system using another more controllable one - are now becoming a reality. In this Insight, the state-of-the-art for quantum simulation is reviewed on various platforms, exploring complementary approaches that have the common aim of solving problems that are computationally too demanding for present-day classical computers.
