British researchers have used patient skin cells to grow the three main cell types that compose blood vessels, according to a report in the journal Nature Biotechnology. The production of vessels in the lab could lead to alternatives to heart bypass and stenting. The cells "could be used to build an artificial artery in a test tube or the stem cells could be injected straight into the heart and they could form within it," the lead researcher said.
