- Study associates stem cell aging with blood cancers in older people
Stem cell aging could be the reason older people are at greater risk of myeloid malignancies and more susceptible to rhinoviruses, flu and other infections, according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers found that hematopoietic stem cells from healthy seniors tend to produce fewer immunoprotective lymphocytes and make more myeloid cells compared with stem cells from healthy younger people, and this could result in weaker immune responses and blood cancers, including acute myeloid leukemia. A study showed that polymorphisms in the tumor necrosis factor and mannose-binding lactin genes are not associated with flu-related deaths of children and young adults.
