====================== THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS =======================
--Biological Sciences
-Low-energy control of electrical turbulence in the heart
Tests in a dog model show that a new technique called low-energy
antifibrillation pacing or LEAP, can resuscitate the heart using much
less energy than conventional cardiac defibrillation - and with fewer
side effects.
http://links.ealert.nature.com/ctt?kn=109&ms=MzY4MTQxNDcS1&r=MjA1NzcwMjE4MQS2&b=2&j=MTA2MTc4OTk5S0&mt=1&rt=0
--Earth & Environmental Sciences
-Increased soil emissions of potent greenhouse gases under increased
atmospheric CO2
Analysis of the published evidence confirms that increased atmospheric
carbon dioxide levels stimulate soil emissions of nitrous oxide from
terrestrial ecosystems and of methane from rice paddies and natural
wetlands. These are both powerful greenhouse gases, and this phenomenon
could negate at least 17% of the mitigation effect of the increase in
the terrestrial carbon sink expected from a rise in carbon dioxide alone.

--Biological Sciences
-Genome sequence and analysis of the tuber crop potato
The genome of the potato, a staple crop vital to food security and
becoming increasingly important in the developing world, has been
sequenced. This achievement will facilitate genetic improvements in
the potato that could boost crop yields.

--Podcast & Video
-This week, we learn how old mathematical theories apply to the modern
world, hear of a gentle way to mend a broken heart and find out how
tiny ancestors gave rise to the biggest creatures ever to have walked
the Earth.

--Specials - Outlook
-Alzheimer's disease
From dancing to drugs, research on Alzheimer's disease is moving
apace. Our improved understanding of the role that amyloid-[beta] plays
is uncovering new ways to treat and perhaps prevent the disease.
Imaging the brain is improving diagnosis, and better biomarkers to
track disease progression are sought. Could we soon lift the spectre
of Alzheimer's disease?
