---THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
--Earth & Environmental Sciences
-Permanent El Nino during the Pliocene warm period not supported by
coral evidence
Indirect evidence that the Pliocene warm period 3.5 million years ago
was a time of permanent El Nino - with the equatorial Pacific uniformly
warm - is contradicted by new data from fossil corals. El Nino climate
variations were much the same as today, it seems.

-Human-specific loss of regulatory DNA and the evolution of
human-specific traits
Over 500 deletions in the human genome remove sequences found in
between chimpanzees and widely conserved in other animals. These
genomic changes are enriched near genes involved in neural development
and steroid hormone signalling.

-Co-adjuvant effects of retinoic acid and IL-15 induce inflammatory
immunity to dietary antigens mechanism
The vitamin A metabolite retinoic acid acts synergistically with the
cytokine interleukin-15 to induce interleukin-12p70 production and
promoting an inflammatory T-cell response to dietary antigens. This
work points to a previously unknown mechanism of possible relevance
to gluten intolerance.
