Alot has been said about the proposed take over of Yahoo by Microsoft, and i think if successful, such a move affects any one who uses Yahoo services. so i got to look at this closely and see if i will gain from it since i am a Yahoo user.
I am a big fun of Yahoo Answers and i think its my best Yahoo service. if Yahoo is taken over by Microsoft, there are three possibilities.
1. improvement of the service
2. worsening of the service
3. removal of the service
I think option number 3 is least likely to happen because Microsoft cannot afford to lose such a popular service. so i am concerned about option number 2.
Microsoft is known for locking up stuff and making them accessible to a chosen group of people. for example Internet Explorer users only. This will make the service less accessible to Internet users since not everyone likes to use Internet Explorer.
According the latest statistics by various companies, they show that Google is by far the leading Search Engine and a Yahoo take over will not do Microsoft any good. here is the statistics.
First, Google currently has a dominant position in search, with 77.2% of all searches.
Search Engine | February Share for All Users |
77.25% | |
Yahoo | 12.24% |
MSN | 3.50% |
Microsoft Live Search | 2.48% |
However, Google's advantage in search among university students is even greater at 90.7%:
Search Engine | February Share for Universities |
90.7% | |
Yahoo | 5.6% |
MSN | 1.9% |
Microsoft Live Search | 1.2% |
This data is derived by compiling usage share for all organizations with the word 'university' in the name.
And even worse for Yahoo and Microsoft, high school students use Google at an even higher rate of 93.1%:
Search Engine | February Share for High Schools |
93.1% | |
Yahoo | 4.0% |
MSN | 0.2% |
Microsoft Live Search | 0.1% |
This data is derived by compiling usage share for all organizations with the word 'high school' in the name.
This data indicates that the future in search is even higher usage share for Google. The combination of Yahoo and Microsoft will do little to change the fact that young people use Google at a much higher rate than the general population.
Microsoft is certainly looking at more than search with its attempted acquisition of Yahoo. However, sponsored ads on search results are the primary revenue generator. And, if that's the main reason Microsoft is using to justify its attempted acquisition of Yahoo.
Well looks like all is not well for Microsoft.
With Google's ADSENSE and ADWORKS, Microsoft has a long battle ahead of it.
Yahoo is one of the leading Webmail service providers. Well Microsoft offers Email too and honestly i prefer MSN email to Yahoo mail. so a Yahoo take over by Microsoft would improve on the Mail service by Yahoo if it is merged with MSN. so that is one of the things to be happy about.
Yahoo social networking service; Yahoo 360 would also be improved since i personally prefer MSN Spaces to Yahoo's 360. but i think Microsoft should open up MSN spaces so that its users can add applications that would make it more interesting to look at and use.
Other services like chat and IM would undergo several changes which might let users communicate with alot more friends with Yahoo accounts. if merged with MSN. this would make Microsoft more popular since that's what this acquisition is all about.
Well good luck to good to Microsoft.
see what Google thinks about this take over.
