Uneven number of chromosomes has mostly detrimental consequences in eukaryotic somatic cells, including impaired proliferation and DNA replication. In contrast, work published in this issue of The EMBO Journal shows that aneuploid murine ES cells maintain proliferative capacity and induce tumorigenesis in vivo, but are hindered in their differentiation.
