| | | The GK Rat Model of Type II Diabetes The Taconic GK rat is a non-obese model of type II diabetes that exhibits metabolic, hormonal, and vascular phenotypes that mimic human disease. - Characteristics include fasting hyperglycemia, impaired secretion of insulin in response to glucose, hepatic and peripheral insulin resistance and polyuria.
- Late stage complications such as retinopathy, microangiopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy are also common.
