  • Cancer drugs tested for use against zoonotic bioweapons
Zoonotic illnesses such as monkeypox and Ebola are potential bioweapons, and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency is funding research into how two cancer medications -- Gleevec and Tasigna -- could serve as a defense against such attacks. The idea is that the drugs could slow an infection, allowing the immune system to mount an effective response. Scientists hope to develop a general defense against a variety of potential bioweapons because producing a separate drug for use against each agent is not practical. • Texas court rules owners cannot sue for emotional damages
On Friday, the Texas Supreme Court ruled that owners cannot seek monetary compensation for the emotional loss suffered when a pet is killed. The ruling comes in the case of a family whose dog was mistakenly euthanized at a Texas shelter after it ran away from home. They sued for damages related to the loss of companionship. "Pets are property in the eyes of the law, and we decline to permit non-economic damages rooted solely in an owner's subjective feelings ... and as a matter of law an owner's affection for a dog (or ferret, or parakeet, or tarantula) is not compensable," wrote Justice Don Willett.
