Natura Pet initiated a recall of some dry cat food products last month and has expanded that recall to include additional dry cat food and one type of cat treat due to the potential for Salmonella contamination, according to the FDA. No illnesses have been reported. The products are sold in the U.S. and abroad. Scientists are studying the strange, protective slime produced by a 500-million-year-old species to fend off predators. The hagfish, a bottom-dwelling sea creature, releases a slime that forms a strong, stretchy layer when mixed with ocean water. The slime consists of small proteins that could be copied artificially, researchers say. Scientists think the material could be used for athletic clothing and even bulletproof vests. - Governor lifts Okla. ban on horse slaughter
Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin has signed a bill into law legalizing horse slaughter in the state, reversing a state ban on the practice in place since 1963. "Those of us who care about the well-being of horses cannot be satisfied with a status quo that encourages abuse and neglect, or that rewards the potentially inhumane slaughter of animals in foreign countries," Fallin said in a statement.
