  • H7N9 vaccine production fast-tracked
Escalating concerns about the H7N9 influenza strain that has surfaced in China have prompted scientists to use new technology to create a viral seed strain, potentially shortening the development time for a vaccine. The approach, developed after the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, uses the genetic code of the virus, instead of a sample of the virus itself, to create synthetic DNA and manufacture the virus then used in vaccine development. The time saved could be critical, said Robin Robinson, director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. Reuters (4/11) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Animals use nature to prevent infections; humans may benefit
Whether intentionally or as a result of innate behavior, animals regularly use natural compounds to prevent and address health problems, and studying their habits could lead scientists to new drugs to treat human diseases, researchers say. "When we watch animals foraging for food in nature, we now have to ask, are they visiting the grocery store or are they visiting the pharmacy?" said ecology professor Mark Hunter. "We can learn a lot about how to treat parasites and disease by watching other animals." National Public Radio/Shots blog (4/11), ScienceDaily (4/11) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Why annual heartworm testing is important
Annual heartworm blood testing is recommended for all dogs, even those whose owners insist they haven't missed a monthly dose of their preventive treatment, according to veterinarian and past president of the American Heartworm Society Sheldon Rubin, who adds that the FDA supports the recommendation for annual testing. Dogs may not actually swallow pills they are given, and topical treatments can be misapplied. Dr. Rubin explains that giving an infected dog a dose of preventive treatment may cause a serious reaction in the animal. • Don't let chronic complainers bring you down
Self-absorbed chronic whiners can drain the energy from a workplace, diminish engagement and cost up to six hours a week in lost productivity, says Linda Swindling, author of "Stop Complainers and Energy Drainers." "If you don't address the work drama, you risk the loss of productive contributors. Complainers cause good employees to leave a company and jobs they like," she says.
