Struggling to let go: a non-coding RNA directs its own extension and destruction

A mammalian non-coding RNA (ncRNA) templates its extension by Pol II, leading to its destabilization. This represents the first RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) activity in higher organisms.

RNA polymerase II acts as an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase to extend and destabilize a non-coding RNA

The non-coding RNA B2 represses transcription by binding to RNA pol II. However, RNA pol II displays RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) activity to extend and destabilize B2. This provides the first functional role for RdRP activity in mammals.

I kappa B kinase alpha (IKKα) activity is required for functional maturation of dendritic cells and acquired immunity to infection

IKKα kinase has anti-inflammatory activity. Here, IKKα is shown to be required in dendritic cells for T-cell priming and acquired immunity to Listeria monocytogenes. IKKα thus inhibits the innate and activates the adaptive immune systems.

Signal recognition initiates reorganization of the presequence translocase during protein import

The translocation of precursor proteins across the mitochondrial inner membrane is mediated by the presequence translocase and its associated motor complex. Presequence binding to the Tim50 subunit induces the dissociation of Tim21 and the subsequent recruitment of the motor complex.
