Review finds cancer websites lack nutritional guidelines
The websites of only four of 21 National Comprehensive Cancer Network institutions offer nutritional guidelines, and of the seven that provide links to other oncology sites, only 44% had such recommendations, researchers reported on the website of Nutrition and Cancer: An International Journal. The researchers said information offered on the sites was inconsistent and not always cancer-site specific. MedPage Today (free registration) (3/27)

RDs encourage single-day diet strategies to lose weight
Using a "one-day diet" plan that calls for a specific action can help people get back on track after a weekend or holiday splurge, and is a sensible alternative to off-and-on weight-loss efforts, registered dietitian Elisa Zied writes. Dietitians say that strategies include keeping a food diary, making sure to eat breakfast, including a "rainbow" of colorful foods on the menu, keeping healthy snacks available, reducing portion sizes and eating full-fat foods in moderation. Bariatric surgery alters gut microbes that aid weight loss, study says
Part of the way Roux-en-Y gastric-bypass surgery helps people lose weight is to change the makeup of gut bacteria, according to data from an animal study at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. The study in the journal Science Translational Medicine found that obese mice injected with gut bacteria from other mice that had had bariatric surgery also lost weight and fat, without the surgical intervention. Which whole-grain labels should you watch for?
There are a number of product stamps used to identify heart-healthy whole-grain foods, but researchers from Harvard University, who examined labels on 545 products, determined that the best comes from the American Heart Association, which requires a ratio of no more than 10 parts carbohydrate content to 1 part fiber. USDA recommends eating three or more servings of whole-grain products each day. United Press International (3/26)

N.J. mom's fitness challenge emphasizes healthy lifestyle
Jackie Totilo says she helped her daughter increase her physical activity to reduce elevated cholesterol levels, and then used her ideas to build a fitness program at school that led to a Kids Kamp Challenge.
