  • Species richness alone doesn't limit zoonoses, study says
The dilution effect, a commonly held belief that the risk of animal-to-human disease transmission is lower in areas where there are more species, doesn't appear to be supported by scientific evidence, according to new research. The meta-analysis finds the relationship between zoonoses and species richness is complex, variable and dependent on myriad factors, and more research is needed. The authors note that advocating for biodiversity using the dilution effect represents "an oversimplification of disease ecology and epidemiology." • The real coronavirus question: What else is out there?
The SARS outbreak cast a spotlight on the public health implications of zoonotic diseases, and the discovery of a new coronavirus underscores those lessons. "Animal health gets just a fraction of the resources that human health does, which is why we are rarely able to detect new viruses before it's too late and they've already crossed the species barrier," writes Bryan Walsh. However, in recent years, more work has focused on emerging diseases. "If you start looking around, you'd find hundreds of thousands of unknown viruses waiting to be discovered," says Peter Daszak, president of the EcoHealth Alliance. "Most will be harmless -- but some will be lethal." Time.com (3/19) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Orphaned 18-pound polar bear makes his way to zoo
Inupiaq subsistence hunter James Tazruk realized after killing a polar bear in the Arctic that he had taken a nursing sow, so he went in search of the cub. He recovered the small bear, later named Kali, in a den and carried the 18-pound animal home on his snowmobile. Kali now has a temporary home at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage while federal wildlife officials search for a permanent placement. • Plan to avoid meat inspector furloughs clears Congress
The Senate backed an amendment Wednesday that would shift $55 million from a USDA grant program to the Food Safety and Inspection Service, in an effort to avoid furloughs of meat and poultry inspectors that were expected to limit supplies and raise prices. The amendment, part of a broader spending bill, cleared the House today and heads to the White House. "I think it will be a relief to a lot of cattle producers across the nation to hear this," Ed Greiman, president of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association, said of the Senate vote.
