At the FETC Conference Wednesday in Orlando, Fla., Jaime Casap, Global Education Evangelist at Google, told attendees about the ways technology has -- and will continue to -- change K-12 education. Among other things, Casap said technology is causing students to learn in new ways and is providing them with almost constant access to information. The changing landscape, Casap said, makes it even more important for teachers to have access to professional development and for there to be a focus on digital leadership in schools. T.H.E. Journal (1/31)       - The tech tools educators are using now: Experts and educators attending this week's FETC 2013 shared five free programs they have found useful in the classroom. Among them are Popcorn Maker, which is aimed at creating interactive images, and Screenleap, which allows students to access a presentation on a teacher's computer. More schools in India are expected to begin using tablet computers in the classroom with the release of more high-quality, affordable devices. The government reportedly is supportive of the use of tablets for learning, and the technology is seen as particularly beneficial in rural parts of the country. However, it is not expected that rural areas will be able to take full advantage in the next several years because of insufficient broadband access and power supplies. In his annual letter, Bill Gates is calling for a better system for providing feedback for teachers. In recent years, a growing number of companies have been providing technology designed to help in the process. Along with a focus on using video-based teacher evaluations, a Web-based tool now is available to help organize and analyze teacher feedback. With education funding especially tight, the website GetEdFunding allows users to search an online database of available grants and awards, writes Andy Lausch, vice president of higher education for CDW-G, which sponsors the site. Currently, the free site offers access to 750 funding opportunities, Lausch writes. The grants and awards are searchable by content area, 21st-century themes and other categories, he notes. Officials in a New Jersey school district say social media is to blame for much of the bullying that has occurred in the first half of the school year. The issue was in the spotlight following the release of a report showing there were four confirmed incidents of bullying so far and 13 alleged incidents. "Our biggest challenge is and probably will remain the social media stuff that happens outside of school grounds," said superintendent Scott Oswald.
