  • LSU veterinary school marks a decade of cancer care
As part of the 40th anniversary celebration at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, the school's oncology unit marked 10 years of touching animal and human lives. Some of the technicians who staff the unit have pets that have been treated for cancer and say that is part of what motivates them. LSU's oncology service provides care for pets across four states and offers services including chemotherapy and radiation treatments, according to assistant professor of medical oncology and veterinarian Bonnie Boudreaux. • Ice-melting products pose potential hazard to pets
A number of ice-melting products can be harmful to pets, irritating their paws and potentially causing problems if ingested in large enough quantities, according to veterinarian Millie Armstrong. Wiping pets' paws, or even bathing animals if necessary, to remove the de-icing materials will help prevent problems, but owners should also look for signs of irritation including redness, Dr. Armstrong says. • Veterinarian shares the toughest part of her job
Veterinarian Julianne Miller writes that seeing the pain of pet owners who must euthanize a pet because they can't afford emergency medical care is the toughest part of her job. Dr. Miller points out that good medical care inevitably carries a cost, and veterinarians can't render services for free, so owners should be mentally and financially prepared for a pet before they commit to ownership. One way owners can be prepared is to purchase pet insurance, Dr. Miller writes. She also discusses antifreeze toxicity in pets in this article. • Before adopting, be sure you can afford a new friend, experts say: It's essential to understand the costs of pet ownership before choosing an animal, experts say, adding that getting real about costs should stop owners from adopting -- and then surrendering -- pets they can't afford. Some 13 million U.S. households acquire a dog each year, but nearly half are taken to shelters within 12 months, according to Dogtime.com. Owners should be prepared for an initial investment that includes fees for adoption, sterilization, vaccinations and training. However, TV trainer Joel Silverman says families who can handle the costs will find dogs worthwhile: "This is your best friend, right?"
