Have advances in diagnostic tools really made a difference in reducing diagnostic errors? Stefanie Schwanda-Burger and colleagues have addressed this question by examining discrepancies between clinical and autoptic diagnoses in a medical intensive care unit. In this follow-up to a study performed a decade earlier, the authors find that the frequency of major diagnostic errors has declined significantly, and is likely due to new tools such spiral computed tomography angiography, an array of biomarkers, and the use of electronic medical records. |
