Ecology: Honeybee disease can infect bumblebees
Access the paper - Disease associations between honeybees and bumblebees as a threat to wild pollinators
Matthias A. Fürst
Honeybee pathogens have the potential to impact other wild pollinators, specifically bumblebees, according to a study published in this week’s Nature.

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are an important managed insect crop pollinator and are affected by a range of emerging pathogens; active management by beekeepers is required to maintain populations. Wild pollinators such as bumblebees (genus Bombus) are in global decline. Research by Matthias Fürst, Mark Brown and colleagues suggests that pathogen spillover from managed pollinators to wild pollinators might be one of the driving forces behind these declines.
