Mass. issues mosquito prevention tips after horse diagnosed with EEE
A horse in Belchertown, Mass., tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis, a potentially deadly mosquito-borne zoonotic disease, raising the level of EEE threat to critical in the town and to moderate in surrounding areas. State Public Health Veterinarian Catherine Brown said the state is trapping and testing mosquitoes, but she reminded people to take steps to protect themselves. "Today's finding significantly raises our concern for the area. It's important that people in high-risk areas protect themselves from getting bitten by mosquitoes," Dr. Brown said. There were seven human cases of EEE recorded in Massachusetts last year. The Sun (Lowell, Mass.) (7/31)

Takeout from a Colo. restaurant, bear-style
Surveillance video at Edelweiss Restaurant, a German eatery in Colorado Springs, Colo., recently captured footage of a bear taking along the entire dumpster while searching for leftovers. Restaurant employees found the container in the parking lot the next morning. The restaurant's manager says the dumpster will be chained shut going forward to discourage the bear. "The last thing that we want is him getting hurt, and we don't need people coming here and trying to watch the bear -- because he's a big bear," Dieter Schnackenberg said. ABC News/Pets blog (8/2)

Study: Job passion and pay go hand in hand
An Italian survey of more than 4,000 nonprofit employees examined the question of whether workers are motivated more by their passion for their work or the desire to gain higher salaries. The study, published in Small Business Economics, found that employees who care about their work and identify with the company put in longer hours, become more productive -- and tend to earn higher wages. The best of the convention: Veterinarian honored; initiatives take aim at challenges
At this year's AVMA convention, veterinarian Carlos Campos won the title of America's favorite veterinarian. It was one of many highlights of the event, which also marked the AVMA's 150th anniversary. The emphasis was on pet health, as studies shed light on why cat owners skip veterinary visits and the AVMA and many animal health collaborators announced a new initiative under Partners for Healthy Pets to get pets the care they need. "Annual checkups for our pets are as essential as food and love," AVMA CEO Dr. Ron DeHaven said. ChicagoNow.com/Steve Dale's Pet World blog (8/1)
