Scientists at Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics made a synthetic flu vaccine in one week -- the result of a collaboration with the HHS Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority and the J. AstraZeneca plans to advance its three cancer drug candidates into Phase III trials. Researchers in Japan said they were able to create hematopoietic stem cells from induced pluripotent stem cells. The method involved inducing benign tumors in mice using iPS cells and then adding catalysts to trigger the formation of blood-producing stem cells. A Series A funding round has brought in $4.6 million for Callidus Biopharma, a development-stage biotech firm specializing in rare-disease drugs. Money also will go toward the launch of the firm's proprietary protein-expression technology. The Canadian government will invest $1.1 million in a research project by Enerkem to develop new catalytic processes for turning waste into advanced biofuels, the company said. Enerkem will conduct the three-year project at its pilot-scale facility in Quebec with the help of the University of Sherbrooke. Meanwhile, construction of Enerkem's first commercial-scale facility is "progressing well" in Edmonton, with commissioning slated to begin in the summer, a spokeswoman said.
