  • Mesenchymal cells show promise in treating myocardial infarction
Injecting skeletal muscle- or adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells into the heart muscle of laboratory rats with myocardial infarction led to improvement in left ventricle function and smaller infarct size in the animals, according to a Norwegian study published in Cell Transplantation. Injection of the cells one week after acute myocardial infarction yielded better outcomes compared with infusions of cell culture medium only, researchers said. There is still a need to address several concerns regarding the method, such as whether MSCs from different organisms would yield different functional outcomes, researchers said. • Group proposes repository for conflict-of-interest filings
Representatives of the NIH, FDA, CMS, Pew Charitable Trusts, Cleveland Clinic, Consumers Union, The New England Journal of Medicine and other institutions and associations proposed creating a nonprofit repository for conflict-of-interest disclosures. "A coherent, uniform system will not only reduce the time spent by researchers on administrative tasks, but will very likely improve the accuracy and clarity of disclosure reporting," said Allen Lichter, lead author of the discussion paper, published by the Institutes of Medicine. • Researchers get $2M grant to develop biotech crops for biofuel use
The Department of Energy awarded a team of researchers at Colorado State University a $2 million grant to develop a system for modifying plants' genes, allowing them to be used for biofuel production. "Right now, most of the fuel we produce in biofuels is from materials that can serve as food for humans and animals. What we'd like to do is move to a set of feedstocks that don't compete with animals and humans," said Eric Toone, deputy director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy. • BIO slams report linking RFS to higher food costs
BIO and other biofuel groups have spoken out in defense of the Renewable Fuel Standard after the National Council of Chain Restaurants issued the results of a study attributing higher food costs to the standard. "The U.S. Energy Information Administration has documented the correlation between oil prices and inflation, including food prices. Yet, the report by the National Council of Chain Restaurants attempts to shift consumers' attention from this real world impact to projected impacts from renewable fuels," said BIO Industrial and Environmental Section Executive Vice President Brent Erickson. The cost of energy, particularly oil, is the real culprit behind increasing food prices, Erickson said. EthanolProducer.com (11/28) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
